Advent
On Sunday, November 30, we enter the season of Advent — the time of waiting to celebrate the birth of Jesus. We hope you will join us as we reflect on the ever coming presence of Christ.
Insisting on Hope
When we gather at a vigil, fear is often present, weighing on us like a heavy fog. The candle in our hands can feel fragile, insignificant, the flame easily extinguished. But when we turn to our neighbors to spread the light, it multiplies, wrapping the whole community in warmth. The darkness is not eradicated; if anything, it further illuminates the flicker of the candles. In these vigil spaces, grief and fear dance with gratitude and hope. In these spaces, we find courage and unity. We are reminded that God is near. This vision captures our prayer for this Advent series: that it will illuminate both our hopes and our fears and remind us that God is near.
Advent Vespers
Wednesdays 6:30pm
Advent Vespers, held each Wednesday evening during Advent, will be contemplative in nature. Together, we shall rest in Advent darkness in hope of the Light that has yet to come, listening for the One who not only promises us Light, but who also promises his presence in our darkness. The December 3rd Vespers Service will also include an option for a healing anointing/blessing, especially for those experiencing grief and sadness during this Season.
Soup Suppers
Wednesdays 5:45pm
Before Vespers, we gather for warm soup and fellowship in Fellowship Hall as tradition goes. Soup is usually accompanied by salad and bread, as well as cupcakes and other desserts! These soup suppers are free but donations are welcome.
Childcare is available from 6:15 – 7:30pm at Advent Vespers.
Advent Devotional
Our Advent series comes to you from the good people at Sanctified Art and includes a devotional. This devotional contains art, poems, hymns, commentary, and reflection prompts. It is meant to be read at your own pace throughout the season of Advent and Christmas; it concludes with Epiphany. Hard copies are available at church.
There is an e‑reader version available. Subscribe to our weekly emails (in the footer) for access.
Advent Art
Also from Sanctified Art, we will be focusing on scenes of Advent from various artists. Each week at Advent Vespers, we will focus on two pieces of art.
The Giving Tree
The Giving Tree is a CPC Advent/Christmas tradition. You can buy gifts or make donations to our missions partners. Three partners are selected each year. This year, our partners are: Mendota Community School, Bright Stars of Bethlehem, and Madison International Partners. Come visit the tree in the gathering space at church!
