Rev. Dr. Fahed Abu-Akel was born to Palestinian Christian Arab parents, 35 miles northwest of Nazareth in Galilee. His parents were members of an Orthodox Christian Church that was built 800 years ago. He survived the Palestinian Nakba as a child in 1948.

Rev. Abu-Akel came to the USA in 1966 to pursue his education; he received his M.Div. at Columbia Theological Seminary and Doctorate of Ministry at McCormick Theological Seminary.

His first ordained position was at First Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. He served as their mission pastor for 28 years, he founded a city-wide ministry for international students, and helped to link First Presbyterian with partners in Kenya, Haiti, Brazil, and with the Holy Land.

In 2002, Rev. Abu-Akel was elected the Moderator of the 2002-03 General Assembly of the Presbyterian church USA, the highest elected office in the denomination. As moderator he traveled all over the USA and represented the PCUSA in the following countries: Palestine/Israel, Sudan, Cuba, Indonesia and China.

Though he retired from ordained ministry in 2012, Rev. Abu-Akel has continued speaking on issues of justice and peace, often sharing about the Christian church in Palestine and the people of Palestine who have endured decades of Zionist terror and military occupation. Rev. Abu-Akel joins us in worship following his appearance at the annual conference of the Madison-based Interfaith Peace Working Group on April 23.
