All-Church Book Read – The Far Away Brothers

CPC justice group Refuge invites you to read this book now, and mark your calendars for the book discussion in August. Books are available for purchase at the servery for $10.

Ernesto and Raul Flores leave El Salvador at age seventeen to escape from death threats from gangs. The Flores twins make their way across the Rio Grande and the Texas desert, and come under the control of US immigration authorities. Later they find their estranged older brother in California, where they learn to navigate school, learn a new language, work to pay down their mounting coyote debt, and wait for their day in immigration court. The true story, which reads like a novel, paints a vivid picture of refugee life.  Author Lauren Markham’s The Far Away Brothers was named one of the best books of 2018 by The New York Times Book Review.
